In Search of My Style

I have pondered and wandered through the massive archive I have established and it struck me there are only a few images that I really really like. Bingo- theres a connection surely, the images that I'm most drawn to must reflect what my emotional perspective is and therefore in some instinctive way my style.I know technically and creatively that I will evolve and definitely need to, but there does seem to be a deeper psychological reason that all photographers have for wanting to capture images in their own unique way.

If your a photographer reading this post then I encourage you to do just that, look at the underlying theme that your favourite images have. It will be there and ask yourself "what does the way I see, say about me"Heres just a sample of my favourites that I'm drawn to what do you think it says about me and my style...I'm curious so feel free to comment. I know what I think I'm discovering and I'll share that in my next post, along with a few more insightful images.

In my my new lecture on "How to get what you want with photography" I extensively go into style and how to find it and why it is necessary. Thank you so much for giving more insight to this matter. I like what you said about it being an emotional, gut feeling, or raw inclination. I do think as we master our base style, it will expand as our skills progress. What I find is that it is hard for us to capture our style when we don't have the ability to execute of it because of lack of knowledge. I.E. perhaps Glamour is part of my style and what I like but I have no idea how to take a glamour shot, what lighting to use, how to pose, how to post process, etc.

Thanks so much for this post, it is a great exercise!!!

Great post! I love the one of Rachel! You can definitely pick up on your individual style from the shots you chose. They all seem to have a narrative to them that takes you beyond the single image. I love the one of couple being photographed and the last one. Totally conveys an emotion of what it was like to actually be there.

Cheers Scott & Casey, I really appreciate your comments. Scott, you are absolutely right about the technical aspect. Often we know what we like shooting or what images we get excited about but we need to develop our skills to get there. Thats probably frustrating for most but if you are passionate about developing this style then you will learn how to execute it no matter what.Like all master craftsman it should develop and evolve with time, practice and patience.

Brilliant! You hit the nail on the head with this one Chrissy.
As a photographer, every image that brings joy to others is gratifying. But it's the ones that portray something personal within us that push us to pursue something greater.
I agree with Casey. All of these images tell a story. Even more, they invite you into the minds of the subjects. "What is this person's thoughts at this very moment?" They are private and powerful.
I think they also depict a feeling of classic fine art. My faves are Rachel, the rose, and the couple with onlooking guests. They are all outstanding.
Thank you for the new inspiration! Bravo!
